Milwaukee Pierhead

This lighthouse is located in the Milwaukee harbor just south of downtown. It marks the entrance to the Milwaukee river. The light was first established in 1872 and rebuilt in 1906. The tower measures 11 feet, 6 inches in diameter at the base and stands 42 feet high. It is made out of riveted steel plates 3/8inch thick. In 1910 it had a round lantern with helical bars housing a fourth order fresnel lens manufactured by Sautter of Paris. Today, the lantern is 10-sided and contains a fifth order fresnel lens made by Henri Le Paute of Paris, bearing a date of 1877.
