Lighthouses used to be large houses with a light near it. Today this is what most lighthouses are being replaced with. A simple street like light on top of a skeleton tower. The red and white marker on the tower is called a daymarker and it is just used to help mark this light during the daytime.

Here is another dayboard located near Sturgeon Bay, in Door County Wisconsin.
Sometimes when lighthouses were it was not feasible to build a lighthouse they built towers marking the rocks. Here is one of those towers in Maine near Browns Head Lighthouse.
